From loose grains to solid rock
Weathering breaks rock into sediment; water and wind carry it; it settles in layers in lakes, rivers, and seas. Over time burial squeezes the grains together (compaction) and mineral-rich water glues them (cementation). This two-step, called lithification, turns a sandbar into sandstone and mud into shale.
Three ways to make one
Clastic rocks are built from broken fragments — sorted by grain size into conglomerate (pebbles), sandstone (sand), and shale (clay). Chemical rocks precipitate from solution, like rock salt or some limestones. Organic (biochemical) rocks are built from life: most limestone is compacted shells and coral, and coal is compressed plant matter.
Signs you're holding one
Look for visible layers or banding, rounded or angular grains you can see or feel, and a sometimes gritty or crumbly texture. Fossils are almost exclusively found in sedimentary rock because igneous and metamorphic conditions destroy them. A drop of weak acid fizzing on the surface points to a carbonate like limestone.

Because sediment piles up layer by layer, sedimentary rock is a natural archive. Each bed records an environment — a desert dune, a coral reef, a river delta — and the fossils within date it. Geologists read canyon walls almost like a book, oldest at the bottom, youngest on top.
