What counts as a fossil
A fossil is any preserved evidence of past life — bones, shells, leaves, or even traces like footprints and burrows (trace fossils). To qualify, it generally must be old enough to predate recorded history, typically thousands to millions of years. Fossils are our primary window into the history of life on Earth.
How they form
Fossilization is rare and usually needs quick burial that protects remains from scavengers and decay. Over time, groundwater rich in minerals seeps in and, atom by atom, replaces the original material — a process called permineralization — turning bone or wood to stone while preserving fine detail. Other modes include molds and casts, carbon films of leaves, and preservation in amber or tar.
Where to find them
Because fossils need gentle burial, they live almost exclusively in sedimentary rock — shales, limestones, and sandstones deposited in ancient seas, lakes, and swamps. Sea cliffs, road cuts, quarries, and eroding riverbanks that expose these layers are prime hunting grounds. Igneous and metamorphic rocks rarely hold fossils; their heat and pressure destroy delicate remains.
Collect responsibly
Common invertebrate fossils like ammonites and trilobites are often collectible on appropriate land, but rules matter. Vertebrate fossils (dinosaurs, mammals) and anything of scientific importance are protected by law in many countries and should be reported, not pocketed. Record where each fossil came from — an ammonite without its locality loses much of its scientific meaning.
