Choosing stones

Mix stones of similar hardness in one batch; a soft stone tumbled with hard ones will simply wear away. Avoid cracked, porous, or very soft material (it crumbles or bruises), and never tumble anything toxic like malachite where dust could be inhaled.
Keys to success
Cleanliness matters more than anything: wash the stones and barrel thoroughly between stages, because a single coarse grain carried into the polish will scratch everything. Don't rush a stage, keep the barrel about two-thirds to three-quarters full, and add plastic pellets as cushioning filler. Dispose of grit slurry in the trash, never down a drain where it sets like concrete.
