That crystalline sparkle and swirled veining, plus the acid fizz, distinguish marble from its dull sedimentary parent.
Telling them apart
Both fizz, so use texture: a dull, grainy, possibly fossil-bearing rock is limestone; a harder-feeling, sparkly, veined, crystalline one is marble. In the trade, many polished 'marbles' are actually polished limestone, and some hard 'granites' are unrelated — commercial names aren't geological ones.
