Slow down and observe
Identification is detective work. A single property rarely gives the answer, but three or four together usually narrow it to a handful of candidates. The trick is to look systematically instead of guessing from a first impression.
Work through the properties below in order. Jot down what you see for each one. By the end you'll have a small profile that points strongly toward an identity — or at least a family.
1. Color (useful, but least reliable)
Color is the first thing you notice and the easiest to be fooled by. Trace impurities can turn quartz purple (amethyst), pink (rose quartz), or smoky brown, so color alone is weak evidence. Note it, but never trust it on its own.
2. Luster — how it reflects light
Luster describes the quality of light bouncing off a fresh surface. The first big split is metallic vs non-metallic. Metallic minerals (pyrite, galena) look like polished metal. Non-metallic lusters include glassy (vitreous, like quartz), dull/earthy, pearly, silky, resinous, and the brilliant adamantine sparkle of diamond.
Turn the specimen under a light. A metallic shine dramatically shortens your candidate list.
3. Streak — the color of the powder
Rub the mineral across an unglazed porcelain tile (a 'streak plate'). The color of the powder left behind is often more consistent than the specimen's surface color. Hematite can look silver-gray or black, yet always leaves a tell-tale reddish-brown streak.
Streak only works on minerals softer than the plate (about Mohs 7). Harder minerals like quartz just scratch the tile.
4. Hardness — the Mohs scratch test
Hardness is resistance to scratching, measured on the 1–10 Mohs scale. You can bracket it with everyday objects: a fingernail is about 2.5, a copper coin about 3.5, a steel knife or nail about 5.5, and window glass about 5.5. If your fingernail scratches it, it's very soft (gypsum, talc). If it scratches glass, it's 6 or harder (quartz, feldspar).

5. Cleavage vs fracture
When a mineral breaks, does it split along flat planes (cleavage) or into irregular/curved surfaces (fracture)? Mica peels into sheets (one perfect cleavage); halite and galena break into cubes (three cleavages at 90°); quartz has no cleavage and breaks with smooth, shell-like conchoidal fractures. Cleavage reflects the internal atomic structure and is highly diagnostic.
6. Habit, heft, and extras
Crystal habit is the shape crystals naturally grow into — cubes, six-sided prisms, needles, or rounded 'botryoidal' bubbles. Note heft too: gold and galena feel surprisingly heavy for their size (high specific gravity). A few minerals have signature tests: calcite fizzes in weak acid, magnetite tugs a magnet, halite tastes of salt.
Put the profile together — 'glassy, no cleavage, scratches glass, six-sided prism' says quartz far more confidently than color ever could.
