Under magnification, natural stones usually show tiny inclusions; flawless perfection at a low price suggests glass or synthetic.

Synthetic is not a dirty word

A lab-grown emerald is chemically and physically real emerald — same crystal structure, same hardness. It is not an imitation; it's simply grown by people instead of geology, and it should cost less. The ethical issue is disclosure, not existence. A trustworthy seller will tell you whether a stone is natural, treated, or synthetic.

For anything expensive, home tests only go so far. Independent gem labs use refractive index, spectroscopy, and magnification to give a definitive answer, and a reputable certificate is worth its cost on a major purchase.
