Nice-to-have additions

As you go deeper, add a proper hardness pick set (calibrated points for precise Mohs testing), a UV flashlight (both short- and long-wave) to hunt fluorescence, a small digital scale for specific-gravity work, a field notebook, and specimen bags or boxes. A pair of safety glasses is essential if you'll be hammering rock.

Test in a sensible order

Work from least to most destructive: observe color, luster, and habit first; check magnetism and streak; then bracket hardness, starting soft and working harder so you don't over-scratch; and only use acid last, on an inconspicuous spot, since it etches carbonates. Record each result — the profile you build is what cracks the ID.
